Bottle gourd Tomato Dal / Squash Tomato Dal (Sorakaya Tomato Pappu- telugu)

Today I prepared Bottle gourd Tomato dal for my three year old son. He likes dal with slight tangy flavor. Usually I prepare tomato dal , but today added one more vegetable to increase nutritious value. And my son liked it very much.
 
Bottle gourd/Lauki/opo squash and  Tomato Daal  (Sorakaya Tomato Pappu)

 
Ingredients:
Bottle gourd/Sorakaya/lauki - 1 (Small size)
Tomatoes - 3 (large size)
Toor dal - 1.5 cups
Water - 3 cups
Tamarind - small lemon size
Turmeric - 1/4 tsp
Green chillies - 2
Salt - 1 tsp
Chilli powder - 1/2tsp






 
For Tadka/Talimpu/Popu:
Oil - 1 Tbsp
Mustard seeds - 1/2 tsp
Cumin - 1/2 tsp
Curry leaves - few
Garlic clove -1
Dried red chillies – 2
Hing/ asafetida – 1 pinch
 
Method:
  • Peel the skin of Bottle gourd and chop into small pieces. Chop onions, tomatoes and green chillies into small pieces. Wash the toor dal.
  • In a pressure cooker add toor dal, water, chopped onions, bottle gourd, tomatoes, green chillies, turmeric powder, salt and chilli powder.    

  • Pressure cook until 3 whistles.
  • Once the pressure is released,  Open the lid of pressure cooker. 

  • Mash the boiled daal with potato masher or big ladle.
  • The daal is ready now. Let’s prepare tampering /popu/tadka now.
  • In a small pan heat 1 table spoon of oil. Add one clove garlic, Dried Red chilli , mustard seeds and cumin and fry for about a minute until the mustard seeds splutter. Now add curry leaves and a pinch of Hing.


  • Add the above mixture of oil to dal and mix well.
  • Serve the bottle gourd tomato dal with rice or roti.
